news > our first ever contest!

Are you ready for this? For the first time ever, we are hosting an exciting art contest to encourage the flow of creative juices. Not only can you make something fresh and new for your portfolio, whether you’re an artist, designer, photographer, or really any other visually creative type, but you may possibly win some great prizes at the same time!

Requirements: We’re looking for a new water droplet to be displayed at the top of the sidebar on our front page using the concept of a flood of creativity and inspiration as inspiration! *It must also somehow display our tagline, a flood of ideas, and fit the shape and size given.*

  1. If you have Photoshop: Download this template to make sure the shape of the droplet stays the same as you see above. Everything else about the design is completely up to you!
If you don’t have Photoshop: You can either download a free 30-day trial of it here, or download and print this template to create your artwork on top of it. You can also print out this sheet to practice some smaller scale sketches (like I have shown above) before you begin the final if you’d like.
  2. Brainstorm your design and get to work. You can use previously created artwork, designs, and photographs of your own if you’d like, but make sure whatever you end up submitting is based on the requirements listed above. The templates are designed to be larger so you can get more detailed with your work, but remember that the final design will only be 200 pixels wide. Make sure your design looks good both BIG and SMALL and that it is 100% your own original work.
  3. Submit your work. Send a copy of your design to us at it’s original high-quality size in .JPG format at thefloodzine@gmail.com along with your name and location so we can post your entry on our website and Facebook page as soon as it has been approved.
  4. The design with the most “likes” by the end of the day on March 15th wins! The sooner you complete your design and submit it to us for approval, the more time people will have to vote on your design with “likes”. Make sure you share our page on your wall so your friends can help you win, too!
  5. The winner will be announced and notified on March 17th and prizes will be sent soon after.

The submission with the most “likes” will, of course, have their water droplet displayed on our main page and will also win all of the following:

  • An art supply goodie pack including a spiral-bound sketchbook, high quality pens & drawing pencils, and a few other mystery odds and ends hand-picked to aid in your specific creative process.
  • A copy of our most recent zine issue, The Flood #6 and a Mystic Flood sticker.
  • A coupon code good for a 50% discount in The Flood Shop.
  • An entire year of 200 x 200 pixel ad space on thefloodzine.com for your blog, portfolio, or company under our “Support” section.
  • A mention in our next zine issue, The Flood #7, coming this summer.

2nd and 3rd place winners will receive: A free copy of our zine, The Flood #6, a Mystic Flood sticker, a coupon code good for a 30% discount in The Flood Shop, and a mention in our next zine issue.

But wait… there’s also a prize for voters, too! Every person who “likes” a submission will be entered in to win a free copy of our zine, The Flood #6, and a Mystic Flood sticker. It only takes one “like” to be entered to win. Multiple “likes” on separate entries will not add to your chances of winning, however you are free to vote for more than one entry if you wish.

Please feel free to ask any questions you might have in the comment area
below so everyone can learn from the answer!

Remember: All votes will be tallied at the end of the day on March 15, 2012 and the contest will end. All winners will be announced and notified on March 17th. I’ll also be checking in with contest updates weekly!

design > colorblocked kingdom.

I think it’s so amazing to see, after decades of graphic design history, how artists and designers are coming up with more and more ways to use basic geometric shapes and primary colors to create exceptional and yet still very contemporary pieces of work. It just goes to show how even the simplest of elements can make incredible artwork when they’re used well.

Patrick Hruby is an illustrative graphic designer in Los Angeles who graduated at the top of his class at the Art Center College of Design in 2010 and now works as a freelancer for clients such as Blik, Urban Outfitters, and Ammo Books. His work is very geometric and often uses only primary and sometimes secondary colors and their shades. He was also chosen as one of HOW Magazine’s “16 Inspiring Young Creatives” in their January/February 2012 issue.

design > dream up a new life.

Welcome back! A few changes have been made over the past week to our layout and you’ll soon be seeing a small shift in the quality of our content, too. Who best to usher in this new chapter than by featuring someone who decided to start over with their own chapter, too?

Kate Thomas is the founder and designer behind Little Things Studio, a design shop that is all about celebrating the joy and beauty found in the seemingly insignificant things in life. Kate went through 27 years of life without realizing that she was someone who could create beautiful things. She went to college to get a Public Relations degree and spent a few years writing sales promotions for a mid-sized bank. In 2007, she was really beginning to realize that this was not what she wanted to do nor was it what she was meant to do…
