Photographer Daniel Sannwald, stylist Kathi Kauder, and model Anastasija Kondratjeva worked together to create this highly unusual editorial for the German edition of Interview Magazine’s March 2012 issue. The otherwise beautiful Anastasija dons some current fashions along with a scaly dinosaur mouth that changes colors in each frame. Odd? Very. Captivating? Absolutely!

Photographer Adam Richardson and stylists Simone La Rose and Gabrielle Stival worked together to create this striking editorial for the UK’s Idol Magazine. Bold patterns and high contrast photographs are digitally manipulated into three color channels to give them that amazing 3D look. I only wish I had some 3D glasses to see if it really works!

fashion photography > neon.
Yesterday I talked about the importance of presenting your work in a manner that doesn’t undermine all of the effort you’ve already put in to it. Well, fashion is all about presentation! After a fashion designer is finished with their collection, the work is really only half-way over. A captivating editorial that features that collection in a fashion magazine can be pivotal in helping to extend the designer’s brand image and to hopefully convince others to literally buy in to that type of lifestyle. The presentation is what gives the design context and helps it come to life, so essentially a well-designed portfolio presentation is not merely a way to display your work, but it’s what is ultimately going to sell you and your work (or not!).
Peter Gehrke is a Swedish fashion photographer whose recent photo shoot for Stockholm-based magazine Bon‘s Winter 2011 is all about soft rainbow hues and the nonchalant poses of swaying models in strange atmospheres. Each frame is filled with a sense of movement and a mixture of various textures that all contribute to give off a feeling of effortless beauty and a dreamy, over-the-top lifestyle. Styled by Marcus Söder & Naomi Itkes.

photography > dark into light.

It’s the unfortunate truth that not everyday can be a bright sunny, happy day, but that doesn’t mean that a cold, gray winter day doesn’t have anything beautiful or inspiring to offer. Today’s feature reminds us that there is always something special to glean from those less than stellar moments even if you have to work a little harder to see it sometimes.
Juliette Bates is a French photographer who lives and works in Paris. In this haunting series of photographs, she captures the beauty of the dark arts in a way that combines little pieces of life and death in each frame. There’s something simply eerie yet bright, delicate, and uplifting going on here and I love the duality of it all.

news > our first ever contest!

Are you ready for this? For the first time ever, we are hosting an exciting art contest to encourage the flow of creative juices. Not only can you make something fresh and new for your portfolio, whether you’re an artist, designer, photographer, or really any other visually creative type, but you may possibly win some great prizes at the same time!

Requirements: We’re looking for a new water droplet to be displayed at the top of the sidebar on our front page using the concept of a flood of creativity and inspiration as inspiration! *It must also somehow display our tagline, a flood of ideas, and fit the shape and size given.*

- If you have Photoshop: Download this template to make sure the shape of the droplet stays the same as you see above. Everything else about the design is completely up to you!
If you don’t have Photoshop: You can either download a free 30-day trial of it here, or download and print this template to create your artwork on top of it. You can also print out this sheet to practice some smaller scale sketches (like I have shown above) before you begin the final if you’d like. - Brainstorm your design and get to work. You can use previously created artwork, designs, and photographs of your own if you’d like, but make sure whatever you end up submitting is based on the requirements listed above. The templates are designed to be larger so you can get more detailed with your work, but remember that the final design will only be 200 pixels wide. Make sure your design looks good both BIG and SMALL and that it is 100% your own original work.
- Submit your work. Send a copy of your design to us at it’s original high-quality size in .JPG format at thefloodzine@gmail.com along with your name and location so we can post your entry on our website and Facebook page as soon as it has been approved.
- The design with the most “likes” by the end of the day on March 15th wins! The sooner you complete your design and submit it to us for approval, the more time people will have to vote on your design with “likes”. Make sure you share our page on your wall so your friends can help you win, too!
- The winner will be announced and notified on March 17th and prizes will be sent soon after.

The submission with the most “likes” will, of course, have their water droplet displayed on our main page and will also win all of the following:
- An art supply goodie pack including a spiral-bound sketchbook, high quality pens & drawing pencils, and a few other mystery odds and ends hand-picked to aid in your specific creative process.
- A copy of our most recent zine issue, The Flood #6 and a Mystic Flood sticker.
- A coupon code good for a 50% discount in The Flood Shop.
- An entire year of 200 x 200 pixel ad space on thefloodzine.com for your blog, portfolio, or company under our “Support” section.
- A mention in our next zine issue, The Flood #7, coming this summer.
2nd and 3rd place winners will receive: A free copy of our zine, The Flood #6, a Mystic Flood sticker, a coupon code good for a 30% discount in The Flood Shop, and a mention in our next zine issue.
But wait… there’s also a prize for voters, too! Every person who “likes” a submission will be entered in to win a free copy of our zine, The Flood #6, and a Mystic Flood sticker. It only takes one “like” to be entered to win. Multiple “likes” on separate entries will not add to your chances of winning, however you are free to vote for more than one entry if you wish.

Please feel free to ask any questions you might have in the comment area
below so everyone can learn from the answer!
Remember: All votes will be tallied at the end of the day on March 15, 2012 and the contest will end. All winners will be announced and notified on March 17th. I’ll also be checking in with contest updates weekly!
studio sessions > daily cruise mix.

Studio Sessions is a new music feature where artists, designers, and photographers share a playlist of music they enjoy listening to while they work. Today’s playlist is by a photographer featured in The Flood #6, Max Sanders, a Minneapolis, MN native who loves nothing more than to cruise around on his bicycle, blast music from his portable handlebar speakers, and take beautiful pictures around town. If you’d like to share your own mix via 8tracks please do let me know and I’ll give you all the details!
Here’s what Max has to say about his mix: “When I ride my bike I feel like a bird. Maybe that’s why birds are one of my favorite things to photograph, or maybe it’s because they evolved from velociraptors…. I do love velociraptors. Whatever the reason may be, I have to say that the music I listen to while I ride my bike sets a great mood for photographing all of the interesting things I see on my daily cruises with my Nikon D-60. For my mix I picked an array of songs that are ideal for biking in the sun while taking pictures of birds and anything else you see. I hope you give it a good listen!” – Max Sanders
